The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), on October 10, 2026, reviewed measures to prevent paddy stubble burning in Amritsar and Tarn Taran, identified as hotspot districts during the ongoing harvesting season.
The following has been stated:
CAQM reviewed district-level preparedness, availability of Crop Residue Management (CRM) machinery, farmer support, and in-situ and ex-situ utilisation of paddy straw. Amritsar has established a control room and help desk, while both districts are using balers and supply chains to facilitate ex-situ management of paddy straw.
The Commission directed continued field surveillance, IEC activities, enforcement and coordination among farmers, aggregators, industries and district authorities to prevent stubble burning.
CAQM has deployed Flying Squads in 18 districts of Punjab from October 1 to November 30, 2026, and emphasised continuous monitoring, optimal use of CRM machinery and prompt action against stubble burning incidents.
